Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest parks in the country. It was opened in April 1948 and it covers 11, 747 square kilometers. It located in Taita District at a small town called Voi. It borders other important parks like Chyulu Hills and Mkomazi Game Reserve in Tanzania. The park is easily accessed through several gates. In Voi there is Manyani Gate, in Mombasa there is Bachuma Gate and Sala Gate in Malindi.

Tsavo East National Park is divided into east and west sections by the A109road and railway. It got its name from the river that runs across from east to west called Tsavo River. It has some of the world’s best game animals. It’s also home to the famous big five animals. These include: Cape buffalo, elephants, leopards, Maasai Lion and black rhino. It’s also home to bird species like sacred ibis, black kite, crowned crane and lovebirds. The park is generally flat and consists of dry plains. Other features include the Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls.

Tsavo East National Park has a lot of attraction sites like the Mudanda Rock. This is a 1.6 km inselberg of stratified rock that acts as a water catchment area that supplies a dam around the park. It’s a vantage point for hundreds of elephants and other wildlife that come to quench their thirst during the dry season. The water point is called the Aruba Dam and it was built in 1952 across the Voi River. The Yatta plateau is the world’s longest lava flow and runs along the western boundary of the park. It covers 290km and was formed by lava from the nearby Ol Doinyo Sabuk Mountain.
