Lake Victoria is a name found in many modern and historical books. It cannot be written off immediately because the lake is the one is one of the largest flesh water lakes in the world. Despite all that it has contributed immensely in the fishing industry. Thousands of tones of fish are exported daily from the lake. It’s famous for fish like the Nile perch, Tilapia and small fish species know in local dialect as Omena.

Lake Victoria has enriched the lives of communities living around. It’s through activities like fishing most parents are able to take their children to higher education or even further. Other developments have been development of major town like Kisumu in Kenya and Jinja in Uganda. Most people around this lake rarely do other agricultural activities except fishing. The Omenas are fished at night as they are come out to hunt. Men fish them all night with very shall net and later transport them ashore in the early morning. The fish is said to be very delicious.

Lake Victoria however, is under threat; from a certain type of weed know as the hyacinth. This weed has taken up large part of the sea and its threatening the ecosystem. There have been numerous attempts to try removing the stubborn weeds, but the results have been negative. Various organizations are coming out with ways to help reduce further encroachment of sea by the weed. This weed has harbored even fishing or free movement of ships around the great sea.
